In 2021, the number of thoracic surgeries exceeded 20,000 cases per year for the first time, with a total of 20,405 patients receiving thoracic surgeries at Shanghai Chest Hospital. These included 17,829 pulmonary procedures, 1,113 esophageal procedures, 1,077 mediastinal procedures, 83 tracheal procedures, 76 chest wall procedures, 18 lung transplantations and 209 other procedures. Percentage of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) was up to 92.7%, with 1,006 robotic-assisted thoracic surgeries, reaching a historically high number from a single institution. Surgical volume of pulmonary surgery was increased by 32.1%, with 96.3% patients receiving minimally invasive surgeries. Volume of sublobar resections exceeded over 10,000 cases, including 6,255 cases of segmentectomy, which was increased by 4.4 times than that in 2019. Average length of hospital stays (LOS) continually decreased, with an in-hospital mortality as low as 0.06%.
