Foreword to Shanghai Chest

With long awaited efforts, we are glad to announce the launch of journal Shanghai Chest.

The mission of the journal is to provide its readers with up-to-date, practical, and comprehensive clinical information relevant to chest disease. While the journal is academically supported by the Shanghai Chest Hospital, it welcomes submissions from authors worldwide, publishing articles that focus on chest disease in a wide ranges of forms and meet the professional and educational needs of its readers. To achieve the goal, the content will also focus on an annual update on reports of thoracic surgery, respiratory medicine, cardiology, cardiac surgery, and lung cancer center of the hospital.

It is not uncommon for a single hospital to publish a journal. We have the pioneers like the Cleveland Clinic and the Mayo Clinic, both have their own journals. And the Massachusetts General Hospital publishes its case records as a continuing and featured column in New England Journal of Medicine. We hope this journal could also transfer the expertise practiced by the Shanghai Chest Hospital and let the Shanghai medicine embrace the world’s medical development with a broader vision. With this new platform, we hope all of us from different centers worldwide could better share with and learn from each other in the exploration of chest disease.

As a representative of top medical centers in China, the Shanghai Chest Hospital takes over 500,000 clinical visits and performs more than 10,000 cases of major cardiothoracic surgery every year. Though it has long been our thinking of transferring the vast clinical experience at the Shanghai Chest Hospital to the world in a more systematic way, we have dedicated to launch the journal after entering into a strategic cooperation with the AME Publishing Company. We deem it a favorable opportunity just in time.

Founded in 1957, the Shanghai Chest Hospital (Shanghai Chest Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University) is the earliest medical center specialized in cardiovascular, pulmonary, esophageal, tracheal and mediastinal diseases in the nation that assembles together medical treatment, education, and scientific research. As a first-class specialized hospital in China, it has achieved many “first” titles in its history: in terms of surgical techniques, it has carried out the nation’s first instance of unrelated donor unilateral lobar lung transplantation on adult, the nation’s first aortic valve replacement with coronary artery bypass, the nation’s first tracheal resection and reconstruction, and the nation’s first robot-assisted lobectomy, esophagectomy, and thymectomy. Despite its limited history, it has profound foundation congregating our nation’s most excellent resources in cardiothoracic surgery.

Reputed as the Oriental Pearl, Shanghai is an international, open-minded, and inclusive metropolis. In history it has been the place where the East met the West. And now it is where history meets future for modern China. We have the confidence to build Shanghai Chest into a bright star in the academic arena in the not long future, keeping in mind its ultimate goal to assist chest physicians and researchers in improving care and treatment of patients all over the world.
